Other ProceduresMost patients qualify for LASIK. If we determine at your surgery measurement exam that you are not a LASIK candidate you may qualify for another procedure. Following an in-depth eye examination and consultation, Dr. Imperia will have a better idea of your specific visual needs, activities and eye health. He will then recommend the best procedure available for you at this time. Other procedures include: CLE Clear Lens ExtractionCLE is a surgical correction for farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. It works by removing the natural lens of your eye and replacing it with a lens implant. The implant allows your eye to focus on distant objects without the need for glasses or contacts. CLE is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia and takes only 10-15 minutes. Risks exist but problems are rare. Vision generally returns quickly and patients are typically back to work and normal activities within 1-2 days. CLE is the same procedure that patients undergo for cataracts. Implant surgery is the most common ocular surgical procedure performed in the United States. PRK Photo Refractive KeratectomyPRK is a laser procedure similar to LASIK, but is performed on the surface of the cornea and requires that the surface skin cells be gently removed prior to laser use. Once the surface cells have been removed, the excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. Over the next 1-3 days, the surface cells grow back over the central cornea, and vision improves. During this time there tends to be some irritation to the eyes as the surface cells regenerate. A soft contact is worn during this time to help reduce discomfort. PRK is characterized by a longer healing process and more discomfort than LASIK; however, it requires less instrumentation and avoids creating the flap that is required during LASIK. Future Technology If Dr. Imperia determines that you do not qualify for any current procedure, we will add you to our waiting list for treatment as technology is developed for your specific visual needs.
